The First Darkness is a period of beginnings. It is a time before written records, when the First Creations, primordial forerunners to contemporary life, lived and died. The First Darkness ended with the advent of writing, the creation of calendars, and the rise of Handmrick Eaglecrown. 

The First Darkness also witnessed the birth of divinity. In the aftermath of the jaaren’s departure, the energy they expelled during the purging of their emotions began to coalesce. Originally scattered across all of creation, this energy drew in upon itself, and from it came beings of immense power, beings mortals would come to call gods.
