Sprawling, loud, crowded, and startling, the massive cranes and gearwork ramp systems of the Starsail Shipyards resemble nothing more than some automaton come to life from the Epoch of Beasts that has lain down and begun to binge and purge upon the storied ships from Ait.
Thousands work on the docks, in the warehouses, among the harbormaster’s complex, and throughout the dry dock. Everywhere hobs and foreign immigrants can be found building, repairing, lading, unloading, and piloting hundreds of ships a month in and out of the crescent bay on the shores of Waton simply called The Harbor.
Massive barges fitted with geared shovels dredge the shallows daily. Tugs powered by cunning oarworks guide larger ships to and fro. Dreadnaughts for the djohame of Jorldom and coastal defenders for the lake fleet of Ocrus displace waves several stories high as they are christened and given their maidenhead with a drop to the waters. Amidst all the bustle, veteran fisherman and eelers thread their way among the ships and boats, unafraid of the looming mass of ships or the sudden wakes that blast their smaller flatboats and junks high upon their crests.
The Ait naval base commands a full half of Starsail Shipyards, with attack ships, coastal longboats, and deep sea troop carriers managing maneuvers and used for training the most capable sailors in the world. New innovations are always sought after for use on the high seas, whether in navigation, armament, or propulsion. Sailors are always in demand as well, for the Copper Spring Sea demands a high price in blood for those who make her home.
While merchants, shipbuilders, navy officers and local constabulary all carry their fair share of responsibility and reward among the Shipyards, it is the harbormaster above all others who word is law. The current harbormaster Kepple Barklore (Aristocrat 14) is a seasoned and experienced ship-builder and pilot, and a crafty foe of those who would seek to turn policy, favor, or popularity in a bid to remove him.
